Title: Feedlot forums Mar. 20, 21 in Maquoketa, Clear Lake

The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association is hosting two Feedlot Forums to help producers understand the process of the EPA/DNR workplan, and to introduce them to technical service providers that can work with them to prepare for a site evaluation.

Both meetings will run from 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. On Mar. 20, the meeting will be held at Jackson County Fairgrounds in Maquoketa, and on Mar. 21, the meeting will be held at the Best Western Hotel in Clear Lake. There is no charge for the meetings, and a meal will be provided.

Registrations are being taken up to the event, but to help with meal planning, please call the ICA office (515-296-2266) or email Dianne@iabeef.org to register.

Justine Stevenson, ICA’s government relation and public policy director, says the workplan agreement made by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources in September 2013 indicates that feedyards that have not been evaluated by DNR will receive one within the next four years.

“By attending this session, producers will have access to free consultation with an area technical service provider (TSP) to help them pass their evaluation. In fact, TSPs will be available free of charge to ICA members at these meetings for one-on-one feedlot environmental compliance advising related to the workplan evaluation,” she says.

ICA staff will also provide updates on animal welfare auditing, antibiotic use in feed and water, and new fed cattle marketing opportunities. Toni Dunker of Advance Trading, Inc. will share information about a CME trading tool and its ability to mitigate risk on cattle feeding operations.
