Title: Governor's Charity Steer Show sets fund-raising record

$225,850 raised for Ronald McDonald House Charities

For the third year in a row, the Governor’s Charity Steer Show exceeded its fund-raising record for Ronald McDonald House Charities.  The event earned $225,850 for the three Ronald McDonald Houses in Iowa, which are located in Sioux City, Des Moines, and Iowa City.

All of the houses are located near hospitals and provide a “home away from home” for families of seriously ill children. The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and the Iowa Beef Industry Council jointly sponsor the annual steer show and auction. Governor Terry Branstad hosted the 2014 Show on Aug. 9, in the Pioneer Livestock Pavilion at the Iowa State Fair.

Since its inception in 1983, the Governor’s Charity Steer Show has raised over $2.5 million for the Ronald McDonald Houses of Iowa. The show included 25 steers from around the state that were paraded into the Livestock Pavilion, led by Governor Branstad and other celebrity showpersons competing for the title of “Judge’s Choice.”

The judge selected the steer “Chasin’ Jason,” shown by Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds for overall grand champion honors by official steer show judge Charlie Peters of Bellevue.

Ben Von Glan of Vail owned the steer which was sponsored by the Crawford County Cattlemen and Tyson Fresh Meats. Cookies BBQ purchased the steer at the auction for $12,500. Additional donations were made to the sale by Friends of Ben Von Glan for $300.

Scott and Cora Lahr along with their son Emmett earned the Showmanship Award. The Lahr family was selected by showmanship judge Mark Dorenkamp. The Lahr family’s steer, “Thanks A Million,” was raised by Taylor Lekin of Toledo, and sponsored by Volunteer Boards of Iowa Ronald McDonald Houses. The steer was purchased by Friends of Taylor Lekin including Tama Livestock Auction, Appraisal & Real Estate Services, and Axmear Ag for $7,500.

The steer shown by Mike Pearson was selected by the crowd for the title of “People’s Choice.” The steer, “Toby,” was raised by Tanner Knupp of Washington, and sponsored by the Iowa Bankers Association. The steer was purchased by Riverside Casino for $29,000, which is the second highest amount ever paid for a steer in the show’s history.
